Skagit County, WA – June 25-26, 2016 – The Amateur (Ham) Radio Clubs of Skagit County will conduct their annual Field Day event next weekend.

The purpose of the event is to test and practice emergency communications without the use of commercial power.

The possibility of a major earthquake or dam breach are risks that we live with in the Skagit Valley.  Local ham radio operators stand ready when all else fails.

This year’s event will be held near 536 W State Street Sedro Woolley across the street from Burger King.  The public is invited from 12 – 6 pm on Saturday June 25 and from 9am – 12 noon on Sunday June 26.  There will be demonstrations on the various aspects of ham radio.

Since the first ARRL Field Day in 1933, radio amateurs throughout North America have practiced the rapid deployment of radio communications equipment in environments ranging from operations under tents in remote areas to operations inside Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs). Operations using emergency and alternative power sources are highly encouraged, since electricity and other public infrastructures are often among the first to fail during a natural disaster or severe weather.

Mount Vernon based Radio Amateurs of Skagit County president John Olwin K7ONC said, “We are excited to host Field Day again this year in Sedro Woolley.  Ham Radio is a hobby that is open to all.  Our hobby is at a record high, with over 739,000 Hams in the United States.”

Anacortes based Skagit Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Club president Bill Johnson W4JQK said,”Ham radio is a great hobby where you can learn new skills, have fun, and serve the community in times of disaster.  It’s possible to get into ham radio including a class, workbook, FCC testing, and radio for less than $60.00”
