Oso, WA- The Washington State Transportation Commission unanimously approved a resolution renaming a 23-mile stretch of Highway 530 between Darrington and Arlington. It will be known as the “Oso Slide Memorial Highway” to honor and remember the 43 victims of the mudslide.

The Washington State Department of Transportation will place signs inscribed with Oso Slide Memorial Highway between milepost 22 and 45. The signs will be 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide.  They will include, March 22nd, 2014, 10:37 a.m.,  the date and time of the mudslide and the number “43” to represent the victims of the slide.

Earlier this year, families of those killed in the mudslide announced plans for a memorial at the site of the mudslide. They’ve been working with Snohomish County Parks and want to have most of the project funded through private donations.
