Whatcom County, WA – A 36-year old male Whatcom County Corrections Deputy has been arrested after it was discovered he had allegedly had an intimate relationship with a female inmate at the Whatcom County Jail while the woman was in custody.
The sexual relationship allegedly started in August of 2017 and continued until February of 2018. Court documents state the Corrections Deputy and the female inmate had “personal and physical contact both inside and outside the jail” including after the woman was released from jail. Court documents allege that the Corrections Deputy threatened the female with being placed in Solitary confinement for up to 23 hours a day and file harassment charges against her if she talked about the relationship in an attempt to keep the relationship a secret.
After the initial report to police of the incident by the woman on January 8th, 2019, and an internal investigation of the allegations, the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office determined an outside agency needed to fully investigate the allegations. The Bellingham Police Department took over the case on January 9th, 2019.
Bellingham Police Detectives investigated the allegations and booked 36-year old Whatcom County Corrections Deputy Adam Garrett Miller of Bellingham into the Whatcom County Jail at 1:53 p.m. on Monday for suspicion of Custodial Sexual Misconduct 2nd and Intimidating a Witness. Mr. Miller was then transported to the Skagit County Jail for his own protection and to avoid a conflict of interest. He made his first appearance in Whatcom County Superior Court on Tuesday afternoon and was released from custody on January 15th, 2019 at 7:37 p.m. on his Own Recognizance.
