Whatcom County, WA – The Washington State Patrol responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision on Southbound I-5, just South of Northwest Avenue around 5:40 p.m. on July 31st 2018.

According to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol, 46-year old Travis Tillerson of Sedro-Woolley was traveling Southbound I-5 approaching milepost 256 in a Grey 2001 GMC Yukon when he slowed for traffic ahead of him.

Troopers say 52-year old Robert Boyles of Ferndale was also  traveling Southbound on I-5, behind the Yukon on a black 2014 Harley Davidson Motorcycle at a high rate of speed.  As Tillerson slowed for traffic ahead of him Mr. Boyles rear-ended the Yukon and  was ejected from the motorcycle, before coming to rest in the center median.  Despite life saving efforts by local firefighters and medics, Mr. Boyles died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

Troopers say drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the crash and Mr. Boyles had a valid motorcycle endorsement and was wearing an US Department of Transportation Compliant Helmet at the time of the crash.

The Harley Davidson was impounded to Johnson’s Towing for Safe keeping.  The Yukon was driven from the scene with reportable damage.  Troopers say Mr. Tillerson was not injured in the crash.

The cause of the accident is listed as Speed and no charges are expected.
