Ferndale Teen Dies in Crash on I-5 in Bellingham


Whatcom County, WA – The Washington State Patrol responded to a two vehicle crash on Northbound I-5 near Grandview Road around 10:12 p.m. on June 28th, 2018.

According to an updated press memo from the Washington State Patrol, 21-year old Tristen Florence of Ferndale was traveling at a high rate of speed, Northbound on I-5,  just North of Grandview Road in Whatcom County in a black 2000 Volkswagen Passat.

Troopers say he changed lanes and drove between two motorcycles, clipping the mirror of a blue 2009 Yamaha Motorcycle being driven by 22-year old Kevin Yo of Surrey, B.C.,  before he lost control of his car, drove off the roadway to the left and into the median.

Mr. Florence was injured in the crash and transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham. A passenger in his vehicle, 18-year old Makyla Carpenter of Ferndale was injured and transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham where she was pronounced dead.


Troopers say Mr. Florence was under the influence of  alcohol at the time of the crash.  They listed the cause of the crash as Speed and Alcohol and he is being charged with Vehicular Homicide for the death of Makyla Carpenter.
