According to locals, Day Creek has become a popular place to dump all sorts of trash, including: household items, drug paraphernalia, and even old vehicles. The community decided to do something about the mess, by scheduling a clean-up day!
Pastor Travis Lohman, of the Day Creek Chapel, initiated the thought of holding a clean-up day. After speaking with the community at their monthly community potluck, a date for this event was set: March 3rd, 2018. Pastor Lohman put in a lot of hard work, acquiring salvage titles for ten vehicles that had been dumped, as well as doing his own “pre-clean up” to remove as many used needles as possible.
The day began at about 8:00 AM, starting with a tasty breakfast served by the Day Creek Chapel. After breakfast, all volunteers attended a brief safety meeting, followed by receiving work assignments for either the Walberg Road site or the old store site. The volunteer crews dispersed to their respective sides, and cleanup began!
With the help of 30+ volunteers, four dump trailers, four excavators, one truck-mounted crane, one CAT backhoe, and one brush hog mower, the community was able to collect six tons of garbage and ten junk vehicles!
The Day Creek Community has also reported that a neighborhood watch group has been formed, and they plan to report any and all suspicious activity in their town.
What a wonderful way for this community to come together and “reclaim” their town! This project could not have been completed without the help of so many volunteers.
