Mount Vernon, WA – The Mount Vernon School District notified parents on October 18th, 2017 that they have received two reports in the past two weeks of a stranger on or near the Mount Vernon High School Campus that has inappropriately touched two students after following them onto the High School Campus.
According to a letter to parents from Mount Vernon High School Principal Rod Merrell, one of the students reported the incident immediately to the school office. The second student reported an incident a few days after it occurred. The Mount Vernon High School has notified the Mount Vernon Police Department and they are taking the reports seriously. Mount Vernon Officers will be patrolling the area and are looking for a white van that was described by both students as being in the area at the time of the incidents.
The Suspect is described as being 18-20 years old, 5′ 10″ tall with a light complexion. He reportedly wears a baseball cap backwards.
Principal Merrell said they have alerted staff at the High School, increased visibility of their security personnel, and will be reminding students of the importance of following safe routes between classes and to and from school. They are also sharing the information with all schools in the area in order to ensure the safety of students.
Principal Merrell said students should tell an adult immediately if they see someone or something that makes them worry or feel uncomfortable. He also said students should travel in pairs and stay with friends and always stay in well-supervised areas.
