Anacortes, Washington- The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is closing Heart Lake in Anacortes to fishing by the public from June 1st, 2016 through June 5th, 2016.
The lake is only open to youth anglers participating in the Kids Fishing Event scheduled for June 4th from 6 a.m. until noon.
Youth anglers will be allowed to fish after the event for the remainder of the day.
This Washington Department of Fish and wildlife (WDFW) says this rule change is necessary to ensure a successful “Kids Fishing Event’. The WDFW will be planting fish in the lake two days prior to the event to acclimate them.
On the day of the event, only children 14 years of age or less will be allowed to fish in Heart Lake.
The Kids Fishing Event is a sponsored event. The City of Anacortes Parks and Recreation and the Fidalgo-San Juan Chapter of the Pugest Sound Anglers have been sponsoring the event for more than 20 years.
The event offers children an opportunity to participate and learn about fishing who might otherwise not get the chance to do so.
There will be a free Barbecue lunch provided for all participants.
For more information on how you can participate, please contact Nicole Johnston, City of Anacortes Parks and Recreation at (360) 2931918 or Steve Stout, Puget Sound Anglers at (425) 345-9577.
