Burlington, WA – A Man was arrested by Burlington Police in the early evening hours of November 1st, 2018 for allegedly assaulting and raping a woman who is eight months pregnant and known to the male, according to a press release from the Skagit County Prosecutors Office.
Rosemary Kaholokula, Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecutor for Skagit County has filed criminal charges against the man in the case, addressing one of the larger problems that the Criminal Justice System in facing.
According to court documents, the man assaulted the pregnant woman by allegedly shoving her face first into a wall divider, destroying her phone. The man is alleged to have threatened to kill her and her unborn child if she was with another man.
Court documents show the man then later apologized to the woman for his earlier actions and then wanted to have sex with the woman. When the woman told him she did not want to have sex with him, the man allegedly laughed at her and raped her.
“This office will vigorously prosecute any rape case as justified by the evidence in the case. That this man is alleged to have raped his 8-month pregnant partner while his two minor daughters were in the home is deeply concerning,” said Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecutor Rosemary Kaholokula.
Kaholokula praised Skagit Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services (SDVSAS), who after getting the referral, immediately contacted law enforcement and offered support to the victim.
Sexual assault cases are difficult to hear about but in this case, with the support of SDVSAS and the work of the Burlington Police Department, the prosecutor’s office will proceed forward with criminal charges in this matter.
The man is scheduled to have his first appearance in Skagit County Superior Court at 1:30 p.m. today. The man is currently being held in the Skagit County Community Justice Center on multiple charges, including two counts of RAPE 2nd DVPA, Assault 4th Degree DVPA and Mal Mis 3rd DVPA.
