Man Struck by Garbage Truck in Bellingham

Whatcom County, WA– The Washington State Patrol responded to a crash involving a garbage truck and a pedestrian in the 3100 block of Sunset Way in Bellingham around 8:50 a.m. on September 3rd, 2018.

According to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol, 56-year old Stevica Devic of Bellingham was backing up in the 3100 block of Sunset Way in a 2009 CCC Garbage Truck to retrieve a missed can when he struck 70-year old Lyle Vanderyacht of Bellingham, who was walking in the roadway.  Mr. Vanderyacht was injured and transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital for treatment.

Troopers say drugs or alcohol weren’t involved and the Garbage truck had an audible back-up tones that were working at the time of the accident. The cause of the crash is listed as Inattention-Pedestrian and Backing-up-Driver. No charges are expected in the incident.
