Mount Vernon Police Launch Homicide Investigation Following Incident That Left One Woman Dead; Suspect in Custody

Mount Vernon, WA – According to information released by the Mount Vernon Police Department, one suspect is in police custody following the discovery of a woman’s body at a residence in Mount Vernon.

At approximately 12:45 PM today, August 26, 2018, Mount Vernon Police were dispatched to the 1200 Block of North 18th Street, for a report of a possible weapon offense. Upon arrival to that scene, officers found a 27-year-old woman who was deceased.

Officers soon learned that the suspect was possibly the significant other of the victim, and that he had left the residence with their 3-year-old child in a vehicle. Burlington Police located the vehicle, unoccupied, in the Cascade Mall parking lot.

Officers from the Burlington Police Department, Sedro Woolley Police Department, Skagit County Sheriff’s Office, and Washington State Patrol assisted in searching the area surrounding the mall. A Mount Vernon Police K-9 was also called in.

About 45 minutes later, the suspect exited the mall with the child, and officers took the suspect into custody. The child was uninjured and investigators are working to reunite the child with family.

The residence on North 18th Street is closed off while the Washington State Patrol Crime Scene Response Team assists Mount Vernon Detectives with processing. The suspect vehicle was towed from the mall parking lot and has been secured in police custody.
