Kiwanis Spray Park Temporary Closure Details

Kiwanis Spray Park Photo

Mount Vernon, WA– The popular Kiwanis Spray Park, located at 500 South 18th street in Mount Vernon, will be closed from August 20th, 2018 through September 4th, 2018 for upgrades. During this time contractors will install an anti-slip surface to the spray park.

Between August 20th and August 24th, the playground bordering the Spray Park will also be closed to ensure the safety of park users during the construction work.

Why the closure and upgrades? Over the past several years, the city has received an increasing amount of warnings and concerns regarding children’s slips, trips and falls on the current concrete spray park play surface.  Despite the textured surface, careful surface preparation prior to opening the park, and consistent maintenance and pressure washing throughout the open season, patrons remain concerned about children falling on the hard surface currently in use.

Several people have voiced their concerns over the work being completed during the summertime and have asked “Why doesn’t the City wait until later in the year to do the work?”  Application of the non-skid material requires significant preparation and curing time. Unfortunately, the optimum time to apply this material is when the weather is dry and warm over a 3-4 week period; at the height of summer use. Since our weather is unpredictable as the fall approaches, the decision was made to delay the project until near the end of summer to ensure maximum use of the park and still allow the best opportunity for successful application of the new surface.

Spray park users should expect the spray park to re-open after completion of the project around the Labor Day weekend and the park is scheduled to stay open until the end of September.

We apologize for the temporary inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we improve Kiwanis Spray Park.
