Plastic Bag Ban Discussed At Burlington Meeting

mwatoday.com

Burlington, WA – On August 13th, the Burlington Chamber of Commerce hosted a plastic bag ban presentation by  Carol Sullivan of Skagit BAG BANd Wagon at the Burlington Public Library.  Sullivan  is passionate  about implementing a plastic bag ban in the City of Burlington and all across Skagit County.

Sullivan has been meeting with cities and towns throughout Skagit County for the last several months, asking them to adopt ordinances that would prohibit retail businesses from providing customers with plastic bags.

In 2011, the City of Bellingham passed a similar ordinance and businesses now charge a small fee for paper bags to offset the costs of the paper bags or customers can purchase reusable bags.  In June of 2018 the town of LaConner passed a similar ordinance. ‘

If the Burlington City Council passes the ban, it would apply to all local stores, gas stations, markets, festivals and shops.  Local Restaurants providing take out food and social service organizations would be exempt from the rule. Also, anyone receiving food assistance would be exempt from the paper bag fees charged by retails establishments.

It is unclear when or if Burlington will move forward with the plastic bag ban.

Customers can currently recycle plastic bags for free  in the food  lobby of the Burlington Fred Meyer Store located at 920 S. Burlington Boulevard.  Fred Meyer has provided plastic bag recycling to their customers in Burlington for several years.
