Skagit County, WA– The Washington State Patrol responded to a fatal car crash on Northbound I-5 near milepost 233, just North of Cook Road around 11:13 p.m. on August 09, 2018.
According to Troopers, 20-year old Drake Michael of Mount Vernon was traveling Northbound on I-5 in a red 2000 Chevrolet Silverado Pickup when he failed to slow down and stop for traffic that had stopped ahead of him on the freeway. Troopers say DRAKE’S truck slammed into the back of a green 2002 Ford Focus being driven by 22-year old Chase Blair of Stanwood. BLAIR died as a result of the crash. DRAKE was transported to Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon. Troopers say DRAKE was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The crash caused a chain reaction involving a silver 2008 Subaru Legacy being driven by 46-year old Guy Shefner of Bellingham, a red 2001 Toyota Echo being driven by 26-year old Cody May of Shoreline and a gray 2006 Acura being driven by 25-year old Conor Enright of North Vancouver, B.C. The drivers of the three additional vehicles were not injured in the crash. The Subaru Legacy, Toyota Echo, Chevrolet Silverado and the Ford Focus were all totaled in the crash and impounded to the Washington State Bullpen in Burlington. The Acura was driven from the scene.
Troopers say Drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the crash. The Cause of the crash remains under investigation and charges against DRAKE are pending.
