Active Duty Sailor Arrested for Rape of a Child

Oak Harbor, WA – According to information released by the Island County Sheriff’s Office, an active duty sailor has been arrested and booked into the Island County Jail for “Rape of a Child in the Third Degree.”

On July 23, 2018, Island County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 31-year-old Ernie M. Chavez Jr., a sailor currently stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. He was arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old boy in a neighborhood that is northeast of Oak Harbor. Mr. Chavez was detained at the scene by the victim’s family and witnesses, until law enforcement arrived.

Reportedly, Mr. Chavez and the victim met on the cell phone dating application, Grindr, which is how they arranged their meeting.

Chavez was set to make his first court appearance today, July 24, 2018, in Island County Superior Court.
