Anacortes, WA – The Washington State Patrol responded to a high risk crash at State Route 20 and 32nd Street in the Anacortes City Limits around 3:12 p.m. on June 12th, 2018.
According to a press release from the Washington State Patrol, 26-year old Anthony Smith of Everett was driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and traveling Southbound on Commercial Avenue at a very high rate of speed in a blue 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. As he was approaching 32nd Avenue he slammed into a silver 2016 Hyundai Elantra being driven by 47-year old Brelyn Edelstein of Anacortes that was stopped at the Southbound red light at Commercial and 32nd Street. The force of the crash caused the blue Jeep Grand Cherokee to rollover where it came to rest on 32nd Avenue.
Mr. Smith was injured and transported by a medical flight crew with Airlift Northwest to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment.
Brelyn Edelstein and a passenger, 20-year old Victoria Edelstein of Anacortes were not injured and released at the scene. Both Vehicles were totaled and impounded by Anacortes Towing for safe keeping.
Troopers say the cause of the crash was Mr. Smith driving under the influence of Drugs or alcohol and excessive speed. Mr. Smith is being charged with Driving under the influence and additional charges may be pending.
