Mount Vernon, WA – On Friday, May 4th, 2018 Mount Vernon Police were dispatched to the 2300 block of Austin Lane for reports of possible human remains found in the backyard of a residence.
According to a press release from Mount Vernon Police Lieutenant Greg Booth, the reporting party told detectives he was clearing a neighboring property when he observed the body laying in some tall grass near a tree and overgrown shrubbery. The yard where the body was located was not maintained, making it difficult to see.
Detectives were called to the scene where they collected evidence and interviewed witnesses, including the residents of the home where the body was located. The Washington State Patrol responded and assisted with aerial mapping of the scene.
The remains were turned over to the Skagit County Coroner’s Office and an autopsy was performed. The body was later identified as 62-year old Joaquin Sanchez-Morelos. The cause and manner of death are still pending.
Mr. Sanchez-Morelos had been reported missing by relatives on March 26th, 2018. Relatives had last seen him a week or two prior to contacting the Mount Vernon Police Department to report him missing. Mr. Sanchez-Morales was known to occasionally stay in a travel trailer on a relative’s property in Mount Vernon, but his family described him as primarily transient.
Lieutenant Booth Said “Though the location and manner in which the body was found is unusual, it’s too early in the investigation to determine if the death is suspicious or natural.
