Deputies Respond to “Shots Fired” Near Big Lake

Big Lake, WA – Deputies with the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office responded to 9-1-1 calls reporting “shots fired” at a woman in the 18000 block of Cardinal Lane near Big Lake around 11:41 p.m. on April 8th, 2018.

According to police  Incident reports obtained by Skagitbreaking.com through a public disclosure request, a 33-year old Mount Vernon woman advised dispatchers that she was being shot at  by a male on the porch of a residence in the 18000 block of Cardinal Lane near Big Lake.

Around the same time, dispatchers received a separate 9-1-1 call advising Deputies  that someone was trying to break into a home in the 18000 block of Cardinal Lane. The caller advised he was armed with a gun.

Deputies arrived on scene  and found the woman who reported being shot at and another woman in a black SUV at the end of the driveway. They told Deputies they were at the residence to pick up items for a third female who lived on the first floor of the home but was currently in jail.

Deputies interviewed both parties in the incident and the  person living on the 2nd floor of the house had previously had his house broke into so he had another relative staying there in case it was broke into again. They both  believed it was being broke into again  by the unknown subjects in the black SUV and fired “warning” shots into the air to scare them off after yelling at them to “get out of here” and they didn’t respond.

Deputies requested to see the hand gun involved and confirmed it was legally owned by the person staying with the homeowner, who also has a concealed weapons permit.   The weapon had also been properly secured as requested by dispatcher prior to the Deputies arriving. The homeowners were advised to call 9-1-1 the next time if it was to ever happen again.

Deputies then re-contacted the two woman who reported being shot at and advised them of the situation. The woman stated they understood why the homeowners fired the warning shots and declined to pursue charges against them. The woman agreed to contact the homeowner the following day to make an appointment to enter the residence and collect their friends belongings, which they admitted they should have done prior to going to the home in the first place.

Deputies then cleared the scene.
