“Harry Potter Bandit” Sentenced to Prison After Bank Robberies in Mount Vernon, Everett, Lynnwood, and Lakewood

Seattle, WA – A bank robber, dubbed the “Harry Potter Bandit” is headed to a federal prison in Dansbury, Connecticut for two years. Caleb Dierlam, 21, of Mill Creek, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Seattle on Friday, March 2, 2018, after pleading guilty to five counts of bank robbery and one count of attempted bank robbery.

The series of bank robberies attracted a lot of attention in 2016, as the robber didn’t seem to “look the part.” The FBI dubbed Dierlam the “Harry Potter Bandit,” after revealing the suspect’s slender build, clean-cut appearance, and the use of glasses during some of the robberies.

Eventually, a customer at a Lynnwood Starbucks called 911 to report that a man using a laptop inside the coffee shop looked to be the “wanted” robber. Dierlam was arrested, and later admitted to robbing banks in Everett, Lynnwood, Lakewood, and Mount Vernon. He had no criminal history prior to the December 2016 arrest. He had been renting a room in Mill Creek from friends of his family.

Dierlam faced up to 20 years in prison, but as a part of the plea agreement, federal prosecutors said they would support lesser punishment.
