Blaine, WA – On Tuesday, December 26th, 2017 at approximately 7:07 p.m., Whatcom County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a husband and wife fighting inside a residence in the 9600 block of Ronald Drive near Blaine, WA.
According to a Press Release via the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, as deputies were responding, dispatch notified them that BRIAN PUKALUK 9-15-74 had discharged a firearm and was leaving in his vehicle. As deputies arrived, they observed PUKALUK’s vehicle cross H Street Road from Ronald Drive and crash into a ditch. PUKALUCK fled the scene but was later located by a Washington State Patrol Trooper on Pipeline Road and taken into custody.
Deputies learned that PUKALUCK and his wife had an argument. In an attempt to take her telephone away, PUKALUCK shoved Mrs. Pukalck’s face down on a wooden bench resulting in lacerations to her facial area. As Mrs. Pukaluck attempted to call for help, PUKALUCK bit her thumb, punched her and attempted to choke her. PUKALUCK subsequently took his wife’s phone outside the residence, threw it on the ground and destroyed it.
Pukaluck attempted to kick down the door to a bathroom where his wife had sought refuge. As a 68-year-old female relative attempted to stop him, PUKALUCK smashed her into the wall causing her to fall to the floor. PUKALUCK’S 71 year old father attempted to stop him and PUKALUCK shoved him as well.
Mrs. Pukaluck fled the residence. While she stood outside the residence speaking with 9-1-1 operators, PUKALUCK emerged from the residence. Mrs. Pukaluck attempted to flee and hide from PUKALUCK . PUKALUCK fired multiple shots at her from a firearm. She then ran to a neighbor’s yard to hide.
PUKALUCK subsequently fired additional shots into his wife’s vehicle which was parked near the residence. He also smashed his vehicle into it and his father’s vehicle causing about $7,000 in damage.
Further investigation also revealed that on December 24th, PUKALUCK set fire to clothing belonging to his wife.
Upon arrest, approximately 3.3 grams of methamphetamine were recovered from PUKALUCK’s person. A search warrant was conducted at the residence and another 3.7 grams of methamphetamine were located.
Troopers from the Washington State Patrol, Officers from the Blaine Police Department and Agents from the United States Border Patrol assisted deputies in the arrest and investigation.
PUKALUCK was initially booked into the Whatcom County Jail on charges of Attempted 2nd degree murder, three counts of Assault 4th, Hit and Run, Malicious Mischief and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Whatcom County Sheriff Elfo said: “We are very fortunate that no one was killed during this episode. This incident is illustrative of the profound dangers associated with domestic violence that not only threatens the intended victim, but in this case, other family members and neighbors in this densely populated neighborhood were placed in harm’s way.”
