Two Men Die in High Speed Crash in Whatcom County

Whatcom County, WA – The Washington State Patrol responded to fatal crash on Old Guide Road near West Pole Road just after Midnight this morning.

According to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol, 21-year old Cesar Cruz-Cruz of Lynden was traveling Northbound on Old Guide Road at a very high rate of speed in a  red 2000 Toyota Camry when he failed to slow down or  stop at the intersection of Old Guide Road and West Pole Road.

The vehicle left the roadway towards the left and struck a tree head-on.  The driver and an unidentified male passenger both died at the scene.

Washington State Patrol Sergeant Mark Francis told the Bellingham Herald the car looked like it imploded on impact and Traffic Investigators believe the vehicle was traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour at the time of the crash.

The driver was not wearing a seat belt but the passenger was. The passengers name has not been released because Troopers had not identified the passenger or notified Next of Kin.

Troopers say it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

The vehicle was impounded to BJS Towing for safe keeping.

Update 4/7/17: The Washington State Patrol released the name of the passenger killed as 19-year old Jorge Cruz-Cruz of Everson. He died at the scene.
